Our Day 1 time trial plays an important role in helping coaches evaluate athletes and identify where they may be most successful, but event assignments are not based on time trials alone. Coaches also consider training, athlete development, meet limitations, and most importantly, the needs of the team.
Think of Track & Field like a football team. Everyone might want to be the quarterback or wide receiver, but a successful team can’t have 50 quarterbacks. We need athletes across every event area, including sprints, distance, hurdles, jumps, throws, and relays.
Especially early in the season, our coaches will challenge athletes to try events they may not initially choose for themselves. Part of our job as coaches is to recognize potential that an athlete may not see yet and guide them toward the events where we believe they can develop, contribute to the team, and ultimately be the most successful.
Athlete preferences matter, but they are one part of a much bigger picture. We ask athletes and parents to trust the process and be open to trying something new. Some our best Track & Field athletes find their event because a coach encouraged them to step outside their comfort zone.

There are three required fees associated with participating in Track & Field:
Pay-to-Play Fee: A required West Ada School District athletics fee that helps cover the cost of the seven district-funded coaching positions for our Track & Field program.
ASB Card: A required West Ada School District fee for students participating in school activities and athletics. This fee supports overall student activities and involvement at Eagle High School and does not go directly to the Track & Field program.
Track Team Fee: A required team fee that helps cover the basic costs of hosting and competing in track meets throughout the season. These expenses are necessary for our athletes to participate and compete as a team.

Running shoes, spikes, warm layers (sweats are required if it is colder that 65 degrees outside), water bottle, sunscreen, and an attitude ready to practice.

We practice outside in the rain, snow, and cold. Make sure to pack for all kinds of weather, especially in early season. If your athlete shows up to practice not dressed appropriately, your athlete may be asked to go home.
If practice is cancelled, which it has never been because of weather, Coach Matt will communicate via RankOne.
-
Please communicate any injuries, illnesses, or other health-related concerns with Coach Matt via email or RankOne.
If your athlete is injured, they should communicate directly with the coaching staff and visit the school’s Athletic Trainer during practice times. An injury does not automatically mean an athlete should miss practice. We still want athletes present so coaches and the Athletic Trainer can understand their status, make appropriate training modifications, and help with recovery and injury prevention.
If your athlete is sick, please communicate with the coaching staff and keep them home. Coming to practice sick can prolong their recovery and potentially spread illness to teammates. We would rather have an athlete take the time they need to recover and return to practice healthy.

We’re always looking for parent volunteers to help at our home meets! Volunteer sign-up sheets will be sent out several weeks in advance with opportunities to assist with different events and areas of the meet.
No track experience is necessary. We’ll teach you everything you need to know. Plus, volunteering is one of the best ways to get onto the infield and be close to the action!
If you’re interested in helping with photography, concessions, fundraising, or supporting the team in another way, please reach out to Coach Matt via email.

Teams are not solely determined by individual PRs, but based on the needs of the team.
Being one of Top 8 Boys or Girls helps, but how athletes show up at practice and meets is a big component.
Our coaches are looking for not our our best athletes, but the best representatives of our team for relay positions.

Our coaching staff takes pride in the relationships we build with our athletes. If an athlete has a question, concern, or issue, whether it involves training, event assignments, coaching approach, or team dynamics, we want to hear about it.
We encourage athletes to advocate for themselves and communicate directly with their coaches first. Our communication process should generally follow this progression:
Athlete + Event Coach → Athlete + Event Coach + Head Coach → Athlete + Parent + Head Coach → Athlete + Parent + Head Coach + Athletic Director
Whenever possible, the athlete should remain part of the conversation. Learning how to ask questions, communicate concerns, and work through challenges with a coach is an important part of being a high school athlete.
Our training philosophy is intentional and grounded in current training principles and methodologies used by successful collegiate programs, including the University of Oregon, University of Iowa, The College of Idaho, and others. Training methods evolve, and they may look different from what an athlete or parent has experienced in the past. We welcome questions about why we train the way we do, and our coaches should be able to explain the purpose behind the work we are asking athletes to complete.
If there is ever a concern involving a coaching approach, communication, or team dynamics that cannot be resolved directly with the event coach, please involve Coach Matt so we can address it together.

We understand and encourage our athletes to be involved in other sports, school activities, jobs, and commitments. In many cases, especially with other Eagle High School activities, we can work together to help athletes manage both. Communication is the key.
If your athlete has a known conflict, please communicate with Coach Matt at least three days in advance whenever possible so the absence can be noted appropriately on our attendance sheets. We track attendance throughout the entire season, and consistent participation in practice is an important factor in competition opportunities.
Our expectation is simple: athletes need to practice in order to compete. This standard applies to everyone, regardless of ability, previous accomplishments, or position on the team. Missing practices may affect the number of meets or events an athlete is eligible to compete in, even when we are working with them to manage another commitment.
Football 7-on-7: We want our football athletes participating in Track & Field, and we are willing to work with families to balance both programs. However, 7-on-7 participation by itself does not excuse athletes from Track & Field practices, including Saturday practices. This is especially important early in the season when we are establishing training, evaluating athletes, and preparing for competition. Coaches will modify training when appropriate to help athletes manage both commitments.
When conflicts come up, talk to us early. Our goal is to work with athletes and families whenever we can while maintaining the same expectations and accountability for everyone on the team.

Yes. Regular practices will continue throughout Spring Break because consistency in training is important, especially once we are in the middle of the competitive season.
That said, Spring Break is also an important opportunity to spend time with family, and we absolutely encourage families to take vacations and enjoy the break. If your athlete will be traveling, please communicate with their event coach in advance. Coaches can provide alternative training so athletes can stay on track while they are away.
For athletes who are in town, our regular practice schedule will remain in place:
Monday–Friday: 3:15 PM
Saturday: 9:00 AMMany members of our coaching staff balance coaching with full-time jobs, so we are unable to shift the entire practice schedule for Spring Break.
Whether your athlete is at home or traveling, the goal is the same: communicate with us, stay consistent with training, and enjoy the break.

Athletes are responsible for purchasing their white team jersey & black bottoms (half-tights or shorts), which is designed to be a one-time purchase that can be worn throughout all four years of their Track & Field career. Once purchased, it is the athlete’s responsibility to keep their uniform clean, maintained, and ready for competition.
Please order your athlete’s jersey by February 5 to ensure it arrives before the start of the season. If you miss the ordering window, Coach Matt will have a limited number of jerseys available for purchase, but sizes and quantities cannot be guaranteed.
Varsity jerseys are earned and will be distributed by Coach Matt throughout the season as athletes meet varsity expectations. If you believe your athlete may compete at the varsity level and would prefer to purchase their own varsity jersey early in the season, please communicate with Coach Matt. We can help determine whether purchasing one makes sense for your athlete.

Coach Matt will post event entries by 7:00pm every Tuesday night at the latest on RankOne.
Our coaching staff will enter athletes into the events that they are either: (A) ready to compete in or (B) need to compete it.
Don’t expect for your athlete to run the 100m or the 1600m every meet. Our coaching staff is looking at the overall season’s goals and every meet for every athlete will look different.
-
Longer than everyone expects.
Every track meet is different. Weather, number of entries, scratches, and overall meet operations may vary.
Just plan your whole evening around it, you’ll thank us later.
-
Coach Matt will provide meet schedules and agendas on Monday mornings via RankOne (permitting they are posted by the host school).
Most track meets are a rolling schedule meaning that the next event runs upon completion of the prior event.

Uniform, running shoes, spikes, weather-appropriate clothing (sweats are required if it is colder that 65 degrees outside), water bottle, snacks, sunscreen, and an attitude ready to compete.
-
Generally no unless you are a parent volunteer for one of our home meets or the District Championship. Otherwise, please remain in the stands.
-
Meets are generally delayed or canceled for unsafe conditions such as lightning.
If a meet gets cancelled or delayed, Coach Matt will communicate via RankOne.
-
Drink more water than you think. We recommend to drink 1 full water bottle per class period.
As for eating, eat normal, healthy, & familiar foods/snacks. Meet day isn’t the ideal time to experiment with diet/supplements and worst of all not eating.

Relay teams are not determined solely by individual PRs. While being one of our top eight boys or girls in an event is an important factor, coaches also consider the needs of the team and how athletes consistently show up at practices and meets.
We are looking for more than just our fastest athletes. Relay positions are earned by athletes who compete hard, are dependable, support their teammates, and represent our program well. Our goal is to put together the strongest team, not simply the four fastest individual times.
-
Absolutely!
Our base camp is always where the Eagle Track team tent is at, if you can’t find your athlete after they are competing they are most likely there.
-
Away Meets: Absolutely. We just ask that your athlete checks in with their event coach before leaving. Even if they have completed their scheduled events, they may still be needed for a relay or another team need.
Home Meets: No. All athletes are expected to remain at the meet through the completion of the 4×400 relay. Staying through the end is an important part of building our team culture, supporting teammates, and helping clean up the facility after the meet.
Hosting a meet is a team effort, and helping leave our facility better than we found it is part of being a member of Mustang Track & Field.
-
Eagle High School does not provide team transportation or buses to our away meets, so athletes are responsible for arranging transportation to and from competitions.
For underclassmen or athletes who do not have a driver’s license, please communicate with your event coach in advance. We will work with our upperclassmen and other team families to help coordinate a ride whenever possible.
Being a Mustang means taking care of one another, both on and off the track. That’s what “Our Town. Our Team.” is all about.
